“Gelbe von Thun” (Gelbe Thun; Giallo de Thun) is a delicious yellow saladette, which blushes at the blossom end when fully ripened in the heat. I liked the texture best when not quite fully ripe, as it was a bit too soft for my taste then. The flavor is not strong, but it is somewhat sweet. I recommend avoiding overwatering during ripening for best flavor. Fruit set was particularly abundant and concentrated over a short period of time.
This variety came to me from a friend in Belgium. I had an interesting time discovering the history, finding many versions of the name, in German, French and Italian. After discovering that Gelbe von Thun comes from Switzerland, this made sense because these are three of the four languages spoken there. At first, I thought that “Thun” in the name referred to tuna, from the Middle Latin “thunnus.” And indeed, the name does translate to something like “Yellow from Tuna,” which I wanted to call “Yellow Tuna,” but realized I could not ignore part of the name. After learning that this tomato came originally from the Swiss Biodynamic seed company Sativa, I looked further and found that Thun is a city in central Switzerland, on the Aar River, near the Lake of Thun. NOW this makes sense…Yellow from Thun (the city).
I believe that this is determinate or semi-determinate from its growth habit and fruit set; however, I do not know this for certain as none of the seed sources or databases I found listed these details for this variety.
