“Gnoccia di Limone” (Gnocchia di Limone) is a beautiful blushed pale yellow cherry that reminds me very much of Ranier cherries in appearance. I received seeds from a gentleman in France in 2014, but didn’t get them started in time in 2015 to have a large enough crop to list seeds. He spelled the variety “Gnocchia” rather than “Gnoccia,” and I find the word “gnocchi” more than I can find “gnocci” or “gnoccia”; however, I have a feeling that the Italian language would spell this without the “h,” unless they are two different things, as in tortellini versus tortelloni.
At any rate, the story is that Franck Combesque of France collected these seeds near Milan, Italy. Interestingly, I believe that this is a variety which will show the blush when ripened in heat, as in on the plant in a warm or hot climate, whereas the blush will not show when grown in a cooler climate or picked at breaker and ripened in cool indoor conditions. I saw this difference myself in the fruits I picked first at breaker and the later ones I allowed to ripen on the plant in May. The flavor is sweet and delicious, if not overwatered during ripening.
