“Manganji” is a designated traditional specialty vegetable of Kyoto, Japan. Vegetables that are considered to be specifically regional to Kyoto with distinctive qualities as such are called kyo yasai or dento yasai. Manganji has a thicker wall than other peppers such as fushimi and shishito peppers, yet still has a soft texture compared to crunchy bell peppers. The fruits are about 6” long, mild flavored and with very little heat. The skin of the pepper has a lacquered, shiny surface with wrinkles at the stem end. Manganji peppers are said to be the king of chili peppers in Japan due to the many uses for their thick, soft and sweet flesh…even traditionally used in candy-making. http://kikusumimagazine.com/manganji-pepper/

This is apparently an open pollinated pepper, not to be confused with the Manganji Togarashi pepper, which is a hybrid, obtained through crossing Fushimi Togarashi (a Kyo Yasai) with an American capsicum.
