“Black Primal” seeds came to me in a trade. The original seeds came to the grower from Hungary; however, it is not known if this is a Hungarian variety. The literal translation to Hungarian is “Fekete Primal Paradicsom,” and when I search that name, I get a number of “Fekete paradicsom” varieties, which simply means “black tomato.” After further research, I am wondering if this could be the Russian tomato “Black Prince,” roughly translated by the person who grew this in Hungary as “Black Primal.” But maybe not, since “prince” in Hungarian is something like “herceg.” But the appearance and size of these are VERY similar.
The fruits are huge bonbons of rich, shiny chocolate. The size of the fruits is about baseball (not golf ball or softball)…which is large for a bonbon, so my description is apt. The epidermis is yellow, making this a chocolate rather than a purple tomato. It doesn’t really taste like chocolate…it’s a tomato! But the flavor is very rich and lingering in your mouth, not too sweet, and the fruits are perfect balls with small cores, no waste.
