Grosse Verte Rose – This is an old European heirloom and came to us from a source in France. Mid-season type, but this one loads up very well with ~10-12 oz fruits. Data on this one is short and hard to find, so I’m just going to describe what I found. Nice smooth skins and round/oblate shape. It will show green shoulders early in the ripening, but this fades to some antho as the fruit finishes. Medium sized plant did not need thinning for airflow. Really full tomato flavor with a mild sweetness that one source said had hints of “pineapple. But, I tried to find this unique taste without success. I found a great heirloom with full complex flavor and a touch of sweetness in the finish. It is great as a colorful addition to salads or as slices on sandwiches. A mid season, prolific, indeterminate with fruit setting well into late summer here in zone 6a.
