“Heart Delite’s Black” is a purple tomato, not a black tomato. I was expecting to see a black tomato when I harvested the fruits, because a database stated that they were black. Then I became suspicious and checked the epidermis…clear! Dark flesh and clear skin = purple tomato. I became even more suspicious, and checked the sliced images in the database. Skin tags, places where the knife tore the skin a bit from the flesh on the cut, are great for seeing epidermis color. Examined in extreme close-up, I found clear skin tags on three images, and yellow skin tags on none. All that is to say that this is another variety that we call black, but that is actually purple. But that’s beside the point.
The point is that this is a delicious tomato. It isn’t particularly sweet, however, just very richly flavored. Looking for a better way to describe it, I would say that it is more like a Cabernet Sauvignon wine flavor than a sweet port wine flavor.
Heart’s Delite Black was discovered with an attempt to grow the red variety “Heart’s Delite.” Seeds from another source also grew what appeared to be the same dark tomato. We don’t really know then if this was a bee cross, but it seems that it might have been.
