“Kaleidoscope Jewel” seeds were obtained under that name from a vendor. It is a bit confusing, given that there is a “Kaleidoscopic Jewel” that is rather similar, by Wild Boar Farms. The creation in the photo at Wild Boar Farms shows a saladette with definite green stripes in the unripe stage. Interestingly, I found five different specific phenotypes being sold as Kaleidoscopic Jewel by vendors around the world, and about the only thing they all had in common was the shape and size – a saladette. I am thinking that perhaps the vendor from which I purchased these seeds deliberately grew out this phenotype and then called it “Kaleidoscope Jewel” to give it a separate name rather than perpetuating the confusion over what “Kaleidoscopic Jewel” is supposed to look like. I hope this was the case, and not a simple misspelling. At any rate, I will mark this as a developing variety, and warn you that there may be changes in appearance when you grow these seeds.
This segregate is red (yellow epidermis) with a really nice anthocyanin purple cap that streaks down the sides a bit…not true genetic stripes such as green or gold are. The flavor could have been a bit stronger for my taste. Limited stock.
