  • “Locomotive” (локомотив; Lokomotiv) is a fairly large finger-shaped red paste tomato from Russia. It has high pectin and few seeds, as well as a strong and very sweet flavor. This would be apparent even if I had not verified it with a taste test, because of the high number of stink bugs swarming the fruits. Stink bugs are the connoisseurs of the insect world when it comes to tomato flavor. Invariably, they are most attracted to those varieties that are high in sugar and acid, and I suspect, but have no proof of, high levels of flavonoids.
This is a variety I listed several years ago and then did not grow again because there are so few seeds to harvest…you must really have a ton of fruits to make a respectable packet size offering. This year I grew it in the ground, which allowed the full productivity to occur, and surprisingly, Locomotive handled the nematodes and poor sandy soil extremely well.
This is either a compact indeterminate or a semi-determinate.
