“Mama Leone” is a really excellent red paste tomato from Italy. Per my favorite tomato database, the history is as follows: “An heirloom variety from Italy. Seeds were brought to the United State by a family of Italian immigrants and ended up at a nursery in New York state, who offered plants.”
The fruits were big and meaty with notable pectin content for sauce. They were also juicy enough for fresh eating. Flavor and texture of the fruits were excellent, with the flavor being both strongly acid as well as sweet, with a bit of musky aftertaste that says, “I am tomatoey!” I wish the productivity had been greater for me, since by nature many paste varieties have few seeds. Mama Leone may handle heat well, but she doesn’t seem to care much for the combination of heat and excessive humidity.
