“Margaret Curtain” is reportedly a New Zealand heirloom. It is stated to be one of the Henry Harrington Collection, originally arriving to New Zealand with Henry Harrington’s descendants, the De Malmanche family, one of the original French families who settled that area in the 19th century. I do not have a means of verifying any or all of this information, but other than equally unverifiable speculations that this tomato is actually Cherokee Purple, Indian Stripe, or Black Krim in disguise, nothing else seems to be mentioned about this Tomato of Mystery. The Shadow knows. But I do know that this is another excellent-tasting purple beefsteak with great productivity. It was later than Lilac Lake, but not as late as Clear Lake Heirloom…all three of these being in the wide midseason category. It produced well even in the shade, in a 7 gallon pot. If you are a fan of purple beefsteaks, as I am, you might want to give this mysterious beauty a try.
