“Moosolini” is a big fat red beefsteak with scallops…as my daughter would say, “THICC, Mom! PUDDIN’ THICC!” I think that the breeder was Blane Horton, but I am not sure if he worked with Dean Slater on this one or not…those two have worked together on some amazing crosses. I did find a quotation from Blane about this segregate, “Saving the F5 seeds this week, and for those that remember the history on this tomato, The general PL x RL rule was broken as the F1s came out PL. Many said the cross didn’t take, but it was Deano that pulled me aside, and said GO With IT!” It must have taken, if Brandywine Cowlick’s is a pink PL beefsteak as described in tomato databases, and Costoluto Genovese is a smaller, red beefsteak shape with deep scallops…how could there have been a red potato leaf as a result if the cross had not taken?
It is unfortunate that I had only three fruits with few seeds from my trial, but not really the variety’s fault. I had it planted in a hot, dry, no-man’s land in a corner of my garden…and, well, frankly…it was neglected. Other reports on Moosolini report excellent productivity. The flesh was meaty, with a strong but balanced tomato flavor, not fruity sweet.
