“Mrs. Schlaubaugh's Famous Strawberry” is a variety with a name that makes me long to know the history behind it…but I cannot find it! Who was Mrs. Schlaubaugh? Where did she grow this tomato and where did she first find it?
Regardless, this is a wonderful tomato, with excellent sweet flavor and meaty texture, which I seem to find in most pink hearts.
Most descriptions state, “…an unusual horn-shaped tomato.” I found one that was more accurate, stating, “hearts and oblates…” In my area, many hearts do not express as hearts unless or until the environmental conditions are just right. I harvested oblates, and the later fruits, which were hearts, were damaged by armyworms while still green.
Mrs. S’s FS sets fruit from the bottom of the plant, and up. It is a bit difficult to see all sides of the fruits, especially when the plant is caged…and hence insect critters can have a Famous Strawberry Festival before their damage is noticed.
