“Re Umberto” is a semi-determinate plant with heavy production of plum-to-pear shaped fruit – with, or without, small nipples on the blossom end (all on the same plant, nipples seem to be environmental and are not always present). The red, paste-type fruit are excellent for sauce, canning or cooking but, as is typical of many paste tomatoes, it is rather bland when eaten fresh. Re Umberto has great “hang time” on the plant and is also suitable for winter storage. My original source for these seeds is a good friend from Italy who spends much of her time traveling to all corners of Italy collecting seeds of hard-to-find Italian heirlooms. There are many variations of Re Umberto being sold, under many names, this is the original heirloom grown in Italy. Seeds were harvested from plants grown in a greenhouse to eliminate possible crosses.
