  • “Santa Maria” is a red heart-shaped paste variety, brought by an Italian immigrant to Niagara County, Western New York. It is one of those meaty varieties that has very few seeds for an aspiring vendor to sell! I would need to grow six plants to really make an abundant seed offering here, but I will list what I have because this is a really fine heirloom. The flavor is excellent and balanced, and the meaty, smooth texture is everything that a paste/sauce variety should feature. I have to say that I have had fun with the name, ever since watching the movie “Madagascar 3” numerous times with my daughter. The Italian sea lion Stefano, voiced by Martin Short, starts praying that his friend the tiger will be able to jump through the flaming hoop without burning himself. He chants something to the effect of, “Mamma mia, Santa Maria, Mia Farrow…” Makes me laugh every time. 😊 (see it on YouTube if you like)
