“Tumbling Tom (Red)” is a marvelous basket variety with trailing growth habit and bright red cherries. As it appears that Tumbling Tom Yellow came after this variety, I will designate this further as some other vendors have done by adding “Red” to the title name. This is one of those popular varieties that appears to be different things to different people. Some vendors sell this labeled as a hybrid, while most vendors list it as open pollinated. Some vendors state that it is indeterminate, while most vendors list it as determinate. The plant that I grew was determinate, and was also open pollinated, not hybrid.
Tumbling Tom (Red) was less prolific for me than the yellow sister line was, but that could have been environmental factors of where and when I had it growing. The flavor was significantly better in this red cherry, both sweeter and zippier. I also noticed that the shape of the fruits was not the perfect tall rounds of the yellow line, but more squat and smaller. I may grow both of these again in a side by side comparison of flavor and productivity. For now, I recommend Tumbling Tom (Red) for its fine flavor and ease of growing in a basket or tumbling from a pot on a shelf.
