My kind friend who lives in the Philippines knows that I am always looking for varieties that can handle growing conditions in the southeast US. Mica Red was a recent gift from this friend. I couldn’t find it on the internet using regular searches, but I was sent a photo of the vendor’s seed packet, a company in Manila.
Mica Red is one of those interesting varieties that does not take on purple in the leaf veins etc. when the seedlings are cold and/or malnourished. I am not sure if this indicates the anthocyaninless gene or the anthocyanin absent gene, or neither one of those, but it does make for interesting seedling color in cool weather and pretty green plants in good conditions.
The fruits are cocktail-sized with a bit of a tapered blossom end, almost like small squatty hearts. They are cherry red and meaty enough to be used as sauce tomatoes, but with enough gel for excellent fresh eating. The flavor is strong and balanced, with enough acid to make a statement in a salad or sauce.
Mica Red plants are determinate and compact. I grew mine easily in black 3-gallon nursery pots.

[8,38,34,33,40,97,58,12

0":"post-5983","1":"product","2":"type-product","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"product_cat-red-tomatoes","7":"product_cat-round","8":"product_cat-heart-oxheart","9":"product_cat-plum-shape-elongated","10":"product_cat-heat-set-tomatoes","11":"product_cat-special-humidity-and-heat-tolerant-collection","12":"product_cat-compact-varieties","13":"product_cat-bunny-hop-seeds","15":"first","16":"instock","17":"shipping-taxable","18":"purchasable","19":"product-type-simple
["GET
