I found a bit of information on the origin of this variety posted in a forum:<br \/>\n\u201cPiedmont Pear is an unknown cross that arose in the fields of Bradley Gates of California. As far as possible parentage goes &#8212; he says of some of the crosses that have appeared in his fields that he has saved\/shared seed for: \u2018I do know that most came from Big Rainbow, Marvel Stripe, Brandywine, Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, and Green Zebra&#8230;\u2019 Brad&#8217;s description \u2013 \u2018red\/yellow pear shape large cherry size. Gets very sweet late in the season. Named by a person from Piedmont in Oakland Ca.\u2019\u201d<br \/>\nI do not know if it had a yellow epidermis to start with, but it now has a clear epidermis, which makes this a yellow\/white and pink (not red) bicolor. It was a little stingy with the fruits, as I planted it out rather late in the heat. As with other bicolor varieties I have grown, the prettiest, rosiest color is found on fruits that have ripened on the plant in the warmth.
