“Gypsy Dancer” is a fine bonus I found while growing Spanish Dancer. Spanish Dancer really fooled me in 2020, as it looked exactly like the original photos. At the same time, I also got this basket variety with elongated deep red fruits. They make me think of shameless red lipstick turned up in the tube. The flavor was deep and rich and the plant produced more fruit than Spanish Dancer. This year in 2021 I actually found three versions of Spanish Dancer, with various shapes and degrees of stripes. I swear that one was even pink. Meanwhile though, the new member of the family “Gypsy Dancer” produced from the seeds I had saved and grew exactly as it did last year. The fruits are the same color, shape, and size. The flavor is the same. I am thinking this might be a semi-determinate plant, though I have listed it as indeterminate, because the growth is a little restrained. I will mark Gypsy Dancer as a developing variety and hope that it stays true, because this is one fine little hanging basket tomato.
By the way, I am using the word “gypsy” with the greatest admiration and respect. At some point as a child I had seen “gypsy dancers” from Spain on television, and it impressed me so much that I tried very hard to emulate them with my heels and castanets. At 5 years old though, it wasn’t really happening for me. I truly admire and respect the peoples who have a heritage which at one time was called “gypsy.”
