Black Hole Sun. The flavor reminds me of ripe berries, like blackberries. Sweet and rich! Less than full ripe may be less sweet. This is a variety by Bill Jeffers, and it has been grown by members of our gardening forum since 2014. It has produced a dark, elongated cherry consistently during this time. In another forum, Mr. Jeffers commented on the name he chose for this variety, “…the reason it’s called Black Hole Sun is because Sungold is one of the original parents, and it’s a so-called black tomato.”
Many growers have reported splitting, and indeed the skin is thin. This makes it a delight to eat, but I found that to avoid splitting I could pick just after breaker and let the fruits finish ripening on a tray indoors. Those of you who live in heavy-rain areas may want to use this strategy. I didn’t notice a difference in flavor or texture at full ripe.
Productivity begins slowly and then really snowballs. I will say this is midseason.
