“Bread and Salt” (Khlebosolnye; Хлебосольные) is a fine Russian heirloom. Apparently, it was originally a red oblate tomato. In making its way to the United States, however, it somehow first sold here as a pink heart, and this is still what we have today under the name “Bread and Salt.” The name comes from an old Russian tradition of giving honored guests a loaf of bread and salt as they arrived. Bread is associated with hospitality, and salt is associated with long friendship in the Russian culture.
In regard to growing this variety in the hot and humid southeast US, I will note that this is the most prolific heart I have every grown. It set more fruit, and sizeable fruit, than Dwarf Pink Passion or Yellow Cookie, which both did well for me. I verified the pink color with a clear epidermis, and my notes state that I found Bread and Salt to be “meaty, sweet, and tasty.”
