“Ceylon” is an abundant producer of small, flattened, scalloped red fruits that are soft (but not mealy), seedy, and very juicy. Ceylon almost certainly did not come from Sri Lanka. According to Tatiana’s TOMATObase, Ceylon was “Introduced in 1997 by Tom Stearns of High Mowing Organic Seed Farm. Tom received the seed from Bryan Connolly of Mansfield Center, Connecticut.” I have not been able to find additional details. I do know that it grew and produced well in the middle of my hot and humid summer. It made mini-beefsteaks that were 0.8 to 1 oz. The taste was excellent for those who like strong tomato flavors, having good acid without being a sour tomato and leaving a lasting taste in the mouth. I read it described as being bitter, but I did not taste that at all. It can tolerate a good bit of rain without becoming insipid, so perhaps the person who had bitter fruit did not get enough rain that season. Highly recommended for those who live in hard-to-grow tomato climates, such as the southeast US.
