Charlotte and her sister Charlene are exciting 2024 introductions from tomato breeder TimothyT in NC. These tomato siblings were developed with traditional breeding methods (no GMOs) and are considered stable at the current F8 filial generation. TimothyT made the F1 cross and had help from some fantastic tomato friends during the lengthy selection and evaluation process.
Both Charlotte and Charlene produce 2-3.5 oz, oval-to-round fruit; with Charlene producing a slightly higher percentage of round fruit than Charlotte. Charlene is a pink fruit with gold stripes and Charlotte is a purple (dark flesh) variety with gold stripes. (See photo for comparison of flesh color) Most importantly, both varieties are productive and have excellent flavor. I slightly preferred the flavor of Charlene early in the season and Charlotte later in the season (when the weather warmed).
For many growers, the most exciting thing about these sisters will be their short stature and their potato, chartreuse leaves. Both girls top out at about 3 feet when grown in full sun so are perfect for container growing. Chartreuse leaves? Yes! Above is a photo showing the difference between the traditional green, dwarf leaves and the Charlene/Charlotte chartreuse leaves. Now, in addition to tasting great, tomatoes can be used in themed landscapes!
