“Daniel Burson” is a prolific purple (chlorophyll-retained red flesh with clear epidermis) beefsteak tomato that appeared in the garden of Bill Jeffers of Evansville, Indiana. This may have been the result of a possible cross between Indian Stripe and Daniels. This is one of the very few beefsteak varieties that sets more than four fruits per plant (my usual average for beefsteak varieties is 0 to 4 fruits per plant) in my challenging Florida panhandle climate. It even survived the summer and now in September is bravely wearing two little green fruits. I am a huge fan of purple tomatoes, and Daniel Burson doesn’t disappoint with its rich, tangy and sweet flavor.
