Fat Frog is an original creation of Bunny Hop Seeds. This is a green-when-ripe fleshed variety with a warm ochre cast to the flesh nearest the epidermis. The flavor is sweet like Thompson grapes, with an additional tang. Texture is succulent and juicy. Overwatering during ripening will wash the flavors.
Fat Frog is a segregant from a cross I made of Floragold Basket x (ATVO 0102 x Green Mustang). ATVO 0102 is a variety with bacterial wilt and nematode resistance as well as tolerance to hot and humid conditions. I have not tested Fat Frog against nematodes or bacterial wilt because the purpose of growing tomato plants of this size really is to be able to grow in a pot. I did find, however, very good tolerance to heat and humidity.
When grown in a 1 gal pot, the plant height (in full sun) is 12-14″ and the fruits are regular-sized cherries. When grown in a very large pot (larger than 5 gal), the plant height is a little taller, up to 16-18″ (in full sun), but the fruits do not get appreciably larger. Someone with a long growing season may get a taller plant, but my short growing season limits the overall height that any of my tomatoes reach. Fruits were abundantly produced in the large pot, with fewer fruits on plants in the 1-gal pots (as usual for mini-dwarf types).
2021 Actual comments on the BHS Facebook page and our gardening forum: “My Fat Frog plants are total rockstars in my indoor Aerogardens. I have one Fat Frog plant that is 318 days old and still producing and some others that are about 6 months old and show no signs of slowing down.” “Fat Frog is proving to be on the prolific side of things here and hubs and I just love the flavor. Despite being sweet it has some in your face twang going on too if picked just before fell ripeness.” For my own 2021 experience, Fat Frog has been the “last man standing” with complete foliage and fruit even in September.
