“Gostinets” is a Russian commercial variety developed by Agrofirm ‘Poisk’. The name means ‘little gift’, or ‘treat’ in Russian. Description in Russian: “Original sugary! Salad fruits of excellent piquant taste and aroma. Mid-season variety for film greenhouses. The plant is tall, requires shaping and garter. The fruit is round or slightly flat-round, slightly ribbed, green, with a shade of yellow when fully ripe. The pulp is dense, sweet, aromatic. Weight 150-280 g. For fresh consumption and canning.”
My fruits were 1.5 to 2 ounce small salads, green-when-ripe flesh with yellow stripes upon ripening. The description gives the weight as nearly 9 ounces, so perhaps in better growing conditions (mine was in a pickle bucket) the fruits are larger than those I had. My tasting notes stated, “Juicy with sweet-tart flavor.” NOTE: One packet per order please.
