“Morden Midget” produces surprisingly large deep purple teardrop fruits on a very short plant. Even when grown in the ground, my plants stayed under 3ft tall…actually, more like 2 ft tall. This is a special eggie, one that was developed in the north and bears early enough to produce in Canada. Morden Midget is stated to have been developed in 1958 in the former Morden Agricultural Experiment Station in Morden, MB, Canada. I am surprised that I have not heard of this variety before now. Some growers report fruits in 60 to 65 days. The fruiting did stall somewhat in our very hottest summer days (August) but managed to awaken and yield a few more fruits in October. I could plant this in a pickle bucket, or three plants in a 10 to 15 gal pot. The flesh is tender and creamy. Be sure to pick this while the color is still deep purple, as eggies are normally picked to eat in their “unripe” stage before bitterness sets in at ripeness. Highly recommended!
