“Piennolo Giallo del Vesuvio (GiaGiu)” is said to be a yellow mutation of the heirloom Italian variety Piennolo del Vesuvio, traditionally grown in the Napoli region of Italy. According to my research, this yellow mutation was found in a farmer’s garden, and he named it after his granddaughter Giulia. So “Giulia’s Yellow, or Giallo di Giulia, abbreviated to GiaGiu, may be found under several versions of its name in its circulation around the world; but the more formal mention of it may be “Pomodorino Giallo del Piennolo, nella zona del Vesuvio,” translated to “Yellow Piennolo tomato grown in the Vesuvius area.” I did actually see it written as “Giagiu” in a study that was performed on seven “Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio” tomato landraces, or regional variants. Piennolo Giallo del Vesuvio is a potato-leaf plant. The fruits are the traditional Piennolo shape of a rounded pear with a sharp nipple blossom end tip. Size ranges from 1 to 2 ounces, and the flavor is fairly sweet with acid in a good balance. Piennolo Giallo del Vesuvio seems to need full sun to produce abundantly, more so than other tomatoes I grow.
