“Satsuma White Chōshi” is an eggplant that is nearly identical, if not identical, to Satsuma Long, in my opinion. I cannot be certain that these are not the same thing. My seeds came from Japan, and I have seen photos of this eggplant labeled by this name by photographer Caito. Satsuma White Chōshi has a mild flavor with white to creamy white flesh and fairly thin skin when picked young. When allowed to grow to maturity, as we do when saving seeds, they grow to resemble war clubs with thick skin and a yellow-green color. Eggplants are supposed to be eaten unripe though, to avoid bitterness and gastric upset. Pick this eggie at about 6” long, well before any yellowish tinge shows in the green skin. This is probably the easiest and most productive eggie I have ever grown. It sets fruit early, and keeps setting it until first frost shuts it down. I have grown it in the ground in poor, acidic, sandy soil, as well as in pickle buckets with exhausted potting mix in it. This eggie just laughs at poor growing conditions and sets fruit. Satsuma White Chōshi takes its place in my “WOW!” list because it is effortless to grow, (produces) goes like the clappers, and tastes excellent.
