Sweet Sister Ellie

“Sweet Sister Ellie” is one of three dwarf sister varieties from my gardening forum friend TimothyT in NC. This particular selection was named after yours truly, Ellie of Bunny Hop Seeds. I must admit that I am thrilled and honored to have this variety named after me. The other sisters in this line are Sweet Sister Sunny and Sweet Sister Patty. Sweet Sister Ellie has been described by Tim as “a most tasty dark fruited selection named after my sweet and sassy sister Ellie. Plants are potato leaf rugose semi-determinate dwarfs with good production, reaching 3′-4′ tall at end of season. Mid season ripening. Fruit are dark with clear skin, round in shape, 3-4 locules, juicy, sweet, tangy, sassy, and tasty. Average size 3.5oz-4.5oz.”
My own harvest of Sweet Sister Ellie was greatly affected by the late summer and early fall tropical weather events we had. Normally my tomato harvest is finished by the first of July, if not earlier…but in the challenging season of 2021 I was actually still trying to set out tomato plants in June! I did get a few pretty little purple salads, which was rather a miracle as the plant was trying to set fruit in 95+F heat and 100% humidity each night (clumps the pollen). I expect to have a harvest that matches Tim’s next season. I feel a little odd boasting on the flavor of something named after me, but after all, it was Tim who made this excellent variety…so I can say the flavor was rich, nicely sweet at full ripeness, and had turgid flesh texture.
Sweet Sister Ellie comes from Tim’s cross of Sweet Sue x Indian Stripe, which makes it already a winner in my eyes as I love both of those varieties. I will close this description with Tim’s feelings about his goals for this line: “They have to live up to my beloved sisters’ delightful traits of being sweet, sassy, generous, dependable, good looking, and just down right all around most enjoyable!”
