“Tanggula” is a red, slightly oblate to round, slicer from the Philippines. It came officially to the United States around 1962 from through the Ontario Agricultural Experiment Station, Guelph, Ontario, Canada, as recorded in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Plant Inventory No. 170. The Inventory description states that Tanggula is indeterminate, very prolific, and midseason, with some tolerance to cracking and with excellent taste. The fruits are described as 2.6 to 2.96 inches, and I can concur with this description. The flavor was a fair balance of acid and sugar with a bit more of the acidic contribution to give a strong tomatoey finish. My earliest fruits were nearly 3,” while the last fruits were more cocktail or saladette-sized. Tanggula grew well in my hot and humid conditions and so I recommend it to tomato growers in the southeast United States.
