“Prairie Spice” came to be in 2015 when my gardening forum friend TimothyT in NC shared F4 seeds from the grow out of the well-known hybrid Krimzon Lee with another awesome gardening forum friend in Kansas. From these seeds, Pat in Kansas grew a very tasty, sweet and spicy pepper of scarlet red. Heat level was variable over the years starting at 2500 SHU up to 4000 SHU, sometimes less with extra watering, but grow out participants have reported that it is always sweet with the zingy heat. They have found Prairie Spice wonderful on the grill, chopped into salsa or stir-fried. Tim and Pat did all of the early grow-out work, while other forum members were able to join in at the F8 generation.
      • I really like Prairie Spice because the fruits yield a manageable amount of heat in a fleshy, rather large horn-shaped pepper. The yield was abundant, especially in the later part of my summer, when the humidity decreases a bit and the winds pick up. The moderate to hot, medium thick flesh, and size of the pepper makes it especially useful to cook with and easy to de-seed. Perfect for pepper jelly, excellent in the traditional spicy soups and chilis, and great in the morning’s scrambled eggs! I am definitely going to smoke and dry my saved fruits for paprika this year. Prairie Spice is going on my “WOW!” list.
