“Chondrokatsari” is a beautiful beefsteak variety whose seeds were given to me by a very kind Bunny Hop Seeds customer (thank you!). A vendor who I believe to be in Germany described this variety as, “This variety of the multi awarded tomato comes exclusively
from the blessed land of Kalamata. The Greek name “Chondrokatsari” means fat and curly.”
A number of flattened, somewhat scalloped medium (sometimes larger) red beefsteaks were produced before the plants stopped fruiting in July. My feeling is that it was the humidity/constant rains that prevented fruit set, not the heat. I did have the hardest time remembering how to spell this variety on my tags and records…for some reason I kept calling it chondromalacia patella (which is NOT the same thing!). This variety does have a tendency for the environmental condition called “puffiness,” which you can see by the mostly hollow seed cavities in my photo. The normal appearance is a regular juicy, meaty beefsteak.
Chondrokatsari fruits had an excellent plump flesh texture and what I would consider to be a good old-fashioned flavor, strong and balanced but not sugar sweet.
