Bolivian Tomato Fruit Grape
$2.50
“Bolivian Tomato Fruit Grape” is very similar to Bolivian Tomato Fruit (some have called Bolivian Wild Tomato); however, rather than rounded, it is a yellow grape. The seeds came to me from a friend and wonderful gardener in Germany. I cannot find a specific history on it though. The German name is “Bolivianische Obsttomate Grape,” which translates to Bolivian tomato fruit, with the addition of “grape” to differentiate it from the original round version. There is speculation that the round version was a landrace, shared widely. Bolivian Tomato Fruit Grape does appear to be more widely known “across the pond” than in the US.
I was very impressed with this little tomato for several reasons. First of all, the taste and texture were “WOW.” When not overwatered it is a delicious blend of sweet and acid. Second, the fruits cracked much less than 90% of my other cherry varieties. We had 12” of rain in a little over a week and pretty much everything in the garden cracked…but this little tomato had maybe only one or two cracked fruits. And this was when grown in a pot, which has greater variations in moisture, making any fruits more prone to cracking after heavy rains. Finally, this variety is going on my “WOW” list because it produced and produced, then died back a bit in July, then came back (this is a rarity here) and produced and produced again. Highly recommended, especially for the southeast US and Hawaii.
