“Candyhearts” is a divine little gift from nature, or should I say, from an industrious little bee. Some time ago I found among my cherries this mysterious pink and purple fat little heart-shaped cherry, bursting with juice and flavor. I have not grown anything like it before, other than Painted Pink; however, the flavor and texture are much different as well as the fruit size being more cherry than cocktail. I had trouble settling on a name…it had a standout flavor of sweet and fruity with nice thick flesh. I thought of candy. But everything is named “candy” now, and the word is losing its significance. I have tasted quite a few varieties that were named with “candy” or “sugar” but really didn’t live up to the name in flavor. All I could think of was the combination of sweet and fruity with the beautiful little fat heart shape…and so came up with “Candyhearts.” The productivity has been excellent. At this point it appears to be stable. I have been fooled before, however, so I will list this as a developing variety and remind growers to keep only fat pink hearts dusted with purple.
