“Charles Wright’s Pot Belly Okra” came to me from a member of our gardening forum. Her forum name is Pecancorner, and she wrote about this adorable fat-podded okra heirloom: Charles Wright of Blanket, Brown County, Texas, was a high school science teacher who developed this okra and shared it with the community in his large garden each year. The okra grows to a “massive height” and has an extensive root system. Pecancorner wrote, “The plants branch out like trees, so that one plant will produce, at the height of the season when it has matured, several pods a day… The stalks will grow to 8 or 9 feet tall… The optimim size for picking is about 4 inches long… and 1 1/4″ to 1 1/2″ diameter! It is huge! And tender as can be even at that stage.”
I grew Charles Wright’s Pot Belly in the ground and also in a pickle bucket this year. What I grew in the ground was also in heavy shade, and it just didn’t do as well as my pickle bucket did in full sun. The stalks grew to 5 feet tall in the pickle bucket. This is one of two new “fat belly” okras I have trialed this season.
