“D. Steel” is a beautiful striped, anthocyanin variety bred by Dean Slater from Purple Dragon X Striped Sweetheart. The name of the variety is Damascus Steel, but the word “Damascus” is triggering a hold on orders that is not something I can control. Therefore, the name has been modified just for the listing. Photos of the F1 generation were posted in 2012 in a well-known tomato forum. Seeds were widely shared in grow out efforts. Various phenotypes now exist in circulation under the same name. After trying to grow this variety from traded seeds and getting unstable results, I purchased seeds from another source and had a successful production of fruit that is true to type of the phenotype pictured in the F5 generation. Although the enormous rains in the season this spring caused splitting, Damascus Steel is a most beautiful and tasty variety. My tasting notes report “excellent flavor, not sugar sweet but balanced and bold.” There is a yellow epidermis. Fruit was abundantly produced in my hot and humid climate. I was impressed with the plant’s performance. Because of the cracking from our heavy rains, I did lose many developing fruits and have less stock than I would have in a good year…it is not the plant’s fault.
