“Fruit Punch” is my new favorite cherry tomato. I have a short list of favorite non-micro dwarf cherries, among them are Santiam Sunrise, Der Klein Doctor; Napa Rosé, Coyote, Rosy Cheeks, and a few others. This year I was very pleasantly surprised to find a new favorite, and one that heads the top of the list in regard to flavors that I personally find most pleasing.
Fruit Punch reportedly comes from (was created by?) Bill Minkey, but I cannot find confirmation of this or any other history. What I can find, splashed all over the internet, are rave reviews of the fruity sweet flavor.
But that is the key, the flavor being both sweet and fruity. Plain sweet is not something that my taste buds treasure for more than a moment. Acids and fruitiness that lingers in the mouth are what I particularly enjoy. The texture is succulent and juicy. Everyone has different preferences, which is why I do not grade tomatoes on a numeric scale of 1 to 10. People who like a strong, musky tomato flavor and assertive acid will not care as much for Fruit Punch as I do. If overwatered while ripening, the flavors of this variety will dilute and it will just not be as tasty. So control the amount of water after breaker, if you can, and you will be rewarded by a really fine-tasting cherry tomato.
