“Gajilete de Puerto Rico,” is an heirloom Boricua (Puerto Rican heirloom) that produces medium to large beautifully fluted red fruits. The flesh is soft but not mealy, and has a strong tomato flavor. It tolerated the heat and humidity very well in my garden. The name “Boricua” goes back to before the Spanish arrived in 1493 at what was known then as Borinquen, the name given to the Island by indigenous Taínos. Since that time the word “Boricua” has been used generally to describe someone of Puerto Rican descent, so I cannot say how long this tomato variety has been passed down. It is well worth growing if you live in a hot and humid location. My photo shows the first two fruits, which were considerably larger than the following fruitings as my plant fatigued.
