“Kootenai” is described as an extremely compact variety; however, the growth habit appeared dwarf to me. Kootenai was bred for cool weather growing in the 1960s by the University of Idaho. Red fruits are cocktail-sized. Now here’s the interesting thing: this little determined tomato plant set fruit here in the west panhandle Florida in June. I could hardly believe it. The plant itself did not make it past the first week of August, but that is actually long-lived for a tomato plant in my climate. I found the flavor to be nicer than I expected from an early cool-weather variety. The fruits were juicy and tartish with a very clean taste. Kootenai is definitely worth adding to your pot-grown tomato varieties.
