“Lytle’s Jalapeno” is not the official name for this jala variety. It was developed by Mr. Faron Lytle, a fourth generation chile farmer at Solar Dry Chile farm in Hatch, New Mexico. The reason I have called it “Lytle’s Jalapeno” is because it is listed on their website simply as “Jalapeno.” I thought it might be better to have some more specific identification so that we know where this great flavor came from.
Mr. Lytle described his newly developed jalapeno as “a large hot variety.” I agree! Mine were quite large and quite hot. My photo doesn’t do it justice…I just forgot that I didn’t have a picture yet and finally took one with the very last fruits on the plant in November before frost. I had not fertilized after September, so the plant was a little tired and the fruits somewhat smaller than those in the early and midseason.
At any rate, Lytle’s Jalapeno will not disappoint anyone as it is a vigorous plant that does not seem susceptible to the diseases I have here, and it fruits and fruits and fruits. I grew it in a pickle bucket in partial shade.
The chiles have that unique wonderful twang that says, “I’m a jalapeno!” This one is very nice to smoke, dehydrate, and mix with sea salt to rim the margarita glass (or just sweetened lime juice if preferred). I adore Hatch chiles, but there are some things that just must be made with the flavor of a jalapeno. Highly recommended!
