“Maggie Mater” is a productive dark beefsteak with truly outstanding flavor, brought to us by the combined efforts of my gardening forum friend TimothyT in NC, who made the cross, and another wonderful friend in the same forum (whom I often call “sister”), Pat of Kansas. Pat discovered this strain in 2016 and named it after her mother “who just loved homegrown maters.” In my own trials, Maggie has been the biggest seedling and most vigorous plant. She doesn’t appear to like the humidity very much in regard to fruit productivity, but she does seem to tolerate the heat. In Maggie’s growouts among our forum members she has been tested for flavor against Big Cheef, Faelan’s First Snow, Indian Stripe, Indian Stripe Heart, Cherokee Purple Heart, and others, and made consistently high showing each time. In my own tasting notes I wrote, “WOW! SWEET flavor! Smooth texture and rich taste.”
