“Minibel” is a micro-dwarf commercial variety from the Netherlands. I almost hesitate to call it a micro-dwarf though, as the growth habit is not the stocky, thick single stem that the shortest micros have. Minibel has exactly the same growth habit as Gold Pearl and Chibikko, which is more slender stems with smaller leaves and a height of 12-18” rather than under 12” as most of the stocky micro-dwarfs are. I am very keen to continue growing this variety though, both for the small size and the flavor. I read a review that stated the flavor was tart. I have grown this three times now and the flavor has not been tart at all. It has the best flavor of any micro-dwarf I have tried except perhaps Jochalos and Pinocchio Orange. The super-shiny fat red cherries taste strong, quite sweet, and acidic, which brings Minibel to “Ellie’s WOW! variety” category.
I would have listed Minibel last year, except that I was concerned about the height and wanted to make sure it was a stable variety. My seeds came from a commercial vendor’s packet, but you can’t always tell about these things, and I did have an odd experience with Baby, also from a commercial packet, in that first season, where not all of my seedlings were micro-dwarf. So now, after three times to grow and save seeds, I feel that Minibel is a stable variety and ready to list…just don’t expect it to stay under 12” tall. I have found Minibel to be an excellent producer and rather tough little plant in regard to plant diseases. Highly recommended.
One packet per order please, I want to be able to share this with many gardeners.
