“My Joanie” is the prettiest okra I have seen so far. I bought my seeds from the wonderful folks at Sand Hill Preservation Center, who are doing just what their name says: preserving these rare heirlooms. Sand Hill stated that My Joanie is an heirloom from Mississippi. It is said to be a late variety; however, a 2008 trial run by the Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture in Oklahoma rated it as an early variety compared to 29 other heirloom okra varieties. I have grown My Joanie for two seasons and found it to be early for me as well, here in the Florida panhandle. The yield is high, and the plant height has been generally 4ft tall. Kerr also rated My Joanie as an attractive landscape plant, and I have to agree. It is not green and it is not burgundy, but it is a blend of dusky rose and grass green. This is a variety that can fill your freezer and make your garden very pretty at the same time. I am saying this, remembering that I frequently planted peppers and tomatillos in the flower beds of my front yard when I lived in Jacksonville. I would plant this okra in the front yard too.
