“Nancy D” came to me rather oddly. I found tomato seeds stuck to the pages of a Nancy Drew book published in 1943. I have a collection of Nancy Drew books #1-56, some of which are the original publications, and most were purchased used. Well, in the holidays of 2018, I found these dried tomato seeds stuck to one of the pages in one of the older books and wondered what kind of tomato these might grow and if I would be able to germinate them. Of course, there is no knowing how old the seeds were…a more recent reader or owner of the book might have left them. I love the idea of a young teen girl, eating a tomato salad, being so enthralled by the derring-do of Nancy the girl detective, that seeds were dripped onto the page without realizing it.
I was able to germinate seeds for spring 2019. I grew several plants, all of which produced 2 ounce meaty and juicy red cocktail fruits with an excellent sweet and tangy flavor. I was very excited about the flavor, because if it were a “spitter,” I would have to abandon my little project. From my saved seeds of 2019, I grew more plants in spring 2020, and the fruits were identical to each other and to the previous year. Therefore, I believe that this, although it may have originally come from a grocery store variety, is a stable variety. I wanted to name it “Nancy Drew”; however, I believe that would be a copyright violation of the character name and book series. Therefore, everyone…please meet Nancy D.
