“Xanadu Green Goddess” is a new variety that tastes as good as it looks. This is a green-when-ripe tomato with stripes and anthocyanin. The origin is very interesting. Breeder Blane Horton shared seeds from the variety “Surpriz” in 2013. My friend Trish, from Doc and Katie’s Garden Xanadu, grew the seeds in 2014. She found this gorgeous segregate from what must have been an outcross. According to our calculations, she received F2 seeds. Trish and Blane together worked on the growout such that I received F6 seeds that were grown this year. Trish expressed the wish that Blane and I share this variety with the public now. I have F7 seeds, and the phenotype has not visibly changed since first seen. I will mark this as a developing line, but I believe that it is stable.
I am rather a doubting Thomas regarding reports of tomato flavor. So many times, everything is buttery, or sweet, or a 10/10, or the most delicious ever. I tend to especially doubt flavor reports on fancy new varieties with stripes, spots, antho, ribbons and bells. This tomato surprised me though. Per my tasting notes, “Truly delicious. Plump. Juicy. Sweet and fruity. Strong enough acid to balance.” You can expect me to offer this one each year.
