“Opa’s Liebling” is a vigorously growing potato-leafed variety that produces scarlet-red, round, cocktail size (saladette) fruits. It was a very early variety for me, and produced over a longer period of time that tomatoes normally do in my climate. A very nice lady from Denmark provided my original seeds, and she obtained her seeds from a very nice lady in Germany. “Opa’s Liebling” appears to be a German name, with a translation something like “Grandfather’s Favorite.” It is now one of my own favorites, because the size and flavor make this my #1 daily eating tomato. Many are the times that I want just one tomato to make a sandwich…but am left with half of a large tomato to put in the refrigerator, which ruins the flavor, to save for another use. These are the perfect size for a single sandwich (not a Dagwood sandwich!), and the small cores make for no waste. This is one that I compare to Campari tomatoes, but I believe that Opa’s Liebling has a better flavor and texture.
