TexKan Sweetheart  is another superb introduction from tomato hybridizer TimothyT in NC. TexKan Sweetheart is the result of TimothyT’s 2016 cross of Cherokee Purple Heart X Indian Stripe Heart and is stable at F9. Many thanks to ‘Cheryl in San Antonio’ and ‘Pat in Kansas’ who worked together to stabilize and name TexKan Sweetheart .

The TexKan Sweetheart plant is a vigorous, wispy leaf (see “additional information” below) and produces 8-12 oz purple (dark) fruit, mostly hearts and blunt hearts, with a few large “double” hearts. The flavor of TexKan Sweetheart rivals that of the best dark-fruited tomatoes and especially excels in late summer when the nights are warm and the watering is less frequent. Fruit are delicious eaten fresh yet are meaty enough to cook down into a rich sauce/paste. As the name TexKan hints at, production is above average even in hot climates and she produced very well in my hot, summer greenhouse.

Growing tip: If  this is your first time growing a “heart/oxheart” type tomato note that  the wispy foliage is normal for this type. The photo of the TexKan Sweetheart seedling (below) displays the  wispy  foliage that is typical of the hearts.  This is not a sign that  the plant is sick or in need of water so ignore any urge to overwater.
