“Sweet Sister Sunny” is one of three dwarf sister varieties from my gardening forum friend TimothyT in NC. I am hoping to bring to you also Sweet Sister Patty and Sweet Sister Ellie in the upcoming season. Sweet Sister Sunny has been described by Tim as “a bright sunny yellow F4 selection (now at F7) named after my sweet sister Sunny. Plants are potato leaf rugose indeterminate dwarfs also with good production. (The plants are) 4′-5′ tall at season end. Mid-season ripening. Bright yellow oblate/beefsteak fruit with pink blush, medium thin skin, medium flesh, 5-multi/scattered locules, very juicy, very sweet, fruity and tangy–nothing mild about this one. Average size (is) 4.5-7.5oz, a few at 9oz+.”
My own description is rather a duet I sing with Tim, as Sweet Sister Sunny yielded big white slicers (yellow flesh with clear epidermis = white) with a pink blossom end that blushes more in the heat. The flavor was clean and sweet, not insipid at all. There was an excellent succulent texture with some cracking after heavy rains, which I have noted pretty common among clear-skinned varieties. And truly, just about any tomato I would care to eat does crack after our rains, which usually send down 1 to 2 inches of water in several hours after a dry spell.
Sweet Sister Sunny comes from Tim’s cross of Sweet Sue x Indian Stripe, which makes it already a winner in my eyes as I love both of those varieties. I am eager to offer the other “sisters,” (yes, one is named after ME! I am thrilled about that!) and I will close this description with Tim’s feelings about his goals for this line: “They have to live up to my beloved sisters’ delightful traits of being sweet, sassy, generous, dependable, good looking, and just down right all around most enjoyable!” NOTE: One packet per order please.
