“Cabai Burung Ungu” is said to mean “purple bird chile” in Malaysian, where it is reportedly from. This is a most beautiful frutescens variety, with green leaves laced with purple veins, and small fruits in an array of colors that are held at the top of the plant like a jeweled crown. The plants have always grown to about 4-5 feet tall in my hot and humid garden…it seems to like these conditions. It does remind me of the Tabasco pepper in size and heat. It is usually among the later of my peppers to fruit, as is the Tabasco, but then festoons itself with these jewels. I have very limited seeds, as I did bag several branches, but two of these were torn open and I did not use those fruits. I will try to obtain a greater protected stock for next season.
