“Vidrine’s Midget Cowhorn” is another okra variety that grows very successfully in a pot. It gets to be about the same height as (Dwarf) Cajun Jewel; however, the pods are as large as those of full-sized okra varieties. In a 7-gal pot by my swimming pool, this okra grew to 3 feet tall and produced beautiful pale jade pods that turn ivory-jade with maturity, pretty much through the whole summer. Michael Vidrine is a Brazos County (TX) Master Gardener, Orchardist, Apiarist and Instructor. In “Gardening Tips from the Culinary View” (The Vineyard District, Texas Wine Country Living), Michael wrote, “There is also the variety “Vidrine’s Midget Cowhorn,” developed by a Mr. Vidrine (whom I don’t know but probably am related to) from Lawtell, Louisiana. This is the town where my parents first met.” He went on to state that this is an okra variety that does well in Texas. I know that it does well in the more humid heat of Florida.
